Where discovery moved into the chat window first.
No single federal rulebook to build against, and a commercial layer moving faster than anywhere else. Agent-mediated shopping, tariff volatility and protocol churn are the operating realities here, not compliance deadlines.
What changes when you operate here.
Discovery is already agent-mediated
Presence inside assistant answers is becoming what search ranking was. The budget for it exists and is currently allocated to search, which is the easiest reallocation argument on this page.
The protocol layer is being set here
UCP came out of US retail and the self-serve routes in run through US platforms. Which protocol matters is a judgement call that changes quarterly, and one in-chat checkout product has already been deprecated while its protocol survived.
Tariff exposure moves faster than a season
Landed cost that ignores tariff volatility is the number that gets a season wrong. Sourcing decisions here need scenarios per route rather than a single figure agreed in January.
No federal baseline to build against
State-level rules and sectoral enforcement rather than one statute. Brands operating both sides of the Atlantic generally build to the European baseline and inherit most of this - which is the cheaper order of operations.
Dated, and labelled by confidence.
Some of this is settled and some of it is not. A provisional deadline is marked as one, because planning a compliance programme against a date that can still move is the expensive way to find out it moved.

In forceACP — Agentic Commerce Protocol
LiveThe protocol survives; the in-chat checkout product built on it does not. Instant Checkout was deprecated in March 2026 — the clearest available warning that protocol selection needs judgement, not enthusiasm.
In forceAP2 — Agent Payments Protocol
LiveSigned Intent, Cart and Payment mandates carried as verifiable credentials. Relevant only where an agent completes a payment rather than handing off.
In forceMCP and A2A
Live, and shared across campsThe shared transport layer every major agent ecosystem has converged on. Building your systems as MCP tools is the least vendor-committing move available.
In forceMeasure the traffic before implementing the protocol.
Knowing how much of your traffic already originates from an assistant costs little and decides everything after it. Protocol work is then sized to what that number says rather than to enthusiasm.

Start by finding out what agents already see.
An answer-engine visibility audit and agent traffic measurement, before any protocol work. It is the cheapest step and the one that determines the rest.
